2017 Indian vice presidential election

The 2017 Indian vice presidential election was held on August 5, 2017, to elect the Vice President of India, following the end of incumbent Hamid Ansari's term. The election was conducted by the election commission of India through a secret ballot, utilizing a weighted system based on the electors’ votes. The main candidates were Venkaiah Naidu, representing the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Gopalkrishna Gandhi, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) nominee. Venkaiah Naidu emerged victorious, receiving 516 votes against Gandhi's 244. His election reaffirmed the BJP's significant influence in Indian politics, further solidifying its position within the parliamentary framework.
