2009 Indian general election in West Bengal

The 2009 Indian general election in West Bengal was part of the 15th Lok Sabha elections held across India from April 16 to May 13, 2009. In West Bengal, the election was conducted in four phases: April 30, May 7, May 14, and May 22, encompassing all 42 parliamentary constituencies of the state. The dominant political forces were the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), which led the Left Front coalition, and the Indian National Congress (INC), in alliance with the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The elections were marked by a significant shift in voter sentiment, leading to a historic defeat for the Left Front which had been in power for over three decades. The TMC, under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, made substantial gains, signaling a major political transformation in the state.
