2002 Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly election

The 2002 Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly election, held on February 20, 2002, was a significant political event in the newly formed state of Uttarakhand, India. Established on November 9, 2000, Uttarakhand had its first legislative assembly election to elect representatives for 70 constituencies. The election witnessed a contest primarily between the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), along with other regional parties and independent candidates. The BJP emerged victorious, securing a majority with 36 seats, while the INC garnered 19 seats. The outcome led to the formation of the first BJP government in the state, with Nityanand Swami taking oath as the Chief Minister. This election was crucial in shaping the political landscape of Uttarakhand and laid the foundation for subsequent electoral contests in the region.
