The 104th Wellesley’s Rifles, originally formed as the 104th Regiment of Foot, was a prominent infantry regiment of the British Indian Army, established in the early 19th century. Notably recognized for its exceptional service during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the regiment played a crucial role in various military campaigns across the Indian subcontinent. It was distinguished by its use of rifles, setting it apart from traditional regiments and earning a reputation for marksmanship and mobility. The 104th was re-designated as Wellesley’s Rifles in honor of Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington.
