2009 elections in India

The 2009 Indian general election, held in April and May of that year, was the 15th election to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's Parliament. It was conducted in five phases from April 16 to May 13, 2009, with voting across India to elect 543 members. The election was marked by a significant increase in voter turnout, reaching approximately 58.19%. The ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) led by the Indian National Congress, under the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, emerged victorious, securing 206 seats and returning to power. The main opposition, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), won 187 seats. The election was notable for the emergence of regional parties and the expanding role of coalition politics in Indian governance.
