2016 Manipur unrest

The 2016 Manipur unrest was a period of significant civil disorder and ethnic conflict in the Indian state of Manipur, which began in early 2016 and escalated in June of the same year. Triggered by the government's decision to implement a new set of reservation policies for the Scheduled Tribes (STs), the unrest predominantly involved the Meitei community, which predominantly inhabits the Imphal Valley, and various tribal groups residing in the surrounding hill areas. Protests turned violent, leading to widespread demonstrations, road blockades, and clashes with security forces. The unrest resulted in several casualties and injuries, prompting the imposition of curfews and internet shutdowns. It highlighted the underlying tensions regarding ethnic identity, political representation, and resource allocation in the region.
