2009 Indian general election

The 2009 Indian general election was held in four phases from April 16 to May 13, 2009, to elect the 15th Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's Parliament. This election followed the 2004 general election, in which the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), led by the Indian National Congress (INC) and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, formed the government. The 2009 elections were notable for the high voter turnout, with an estimated 58% of the electorate participating. The UPA won a decisive victory, securing 262 seats out of 543, allowing Singh to continue as Prime Minister. The election was marked by extensive use of electronic voting machines and heightened security measures, reflecting India's commitment to a robust democratic process amidst various challenges, including terrorism and regional disparities.
