2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami

The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history, struck on December 26, 2004. With a magnitude of 9.1–9.3, it originated off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia, triggering massive undersea earthquakes that unleashed devastating tsunamis across the Indian Ocean. The waves reached heights of up to 30 meters and impacted numerous countries, with India being significantly affected. Coastal regions in Tamil Nadu and parts of Andhra Pradesh suffered extensive destruction, resulting in over 8,000 fatalities and displacing hundreds of thousands. The disaster prompted a major humanitarian response and highlighted the need for improved early warning systems in the region.
