2002 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election

The 2002 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election was held between September 16 and October 8, 2002, marking a significant political event in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. This election was the first occurring after the state’s previous assembly was dissolved in 1999, amidst ongoing conflict and political instability in the region. The elections were conducted under heightened security measures, aiming to ensure the safety of voters and maintain order amidst threats from militant groups. The Indian National Congress (INC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), along with other regional parties, participated actively, leading to a competitive electoral landscape. Ultimately, the PDP, in alliance with the INC, emerged victorious, forming the government with Mufti Mohammad Sayeed becoming the Chief Minister.
